Mihintale

Mihintale is a historic site located in the Anuradhapura district of Sri Lanka which is just 1-hour drive from SigiriyaJungles hotel. It is regarded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and it is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims from all over the world.

The site is situated on a hilltop and covers an area of approximately 40 hectares. The name Mihintale is derived from the word ‘Mahinda Thera’, who is believed to have brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC. According to legend, Mahinda Thera met King Devanampiyatissa of Sri Lanka on this hilltop and introduced him to the teachings of the Buddha. This event is considered to be one of the most significant moments in Sri Lanka’s history, and it marks the beginning of the country’s rich Buddhist culture.

Today, Mihintale is home to a number of ancient monuments and structures that serve as important reminders of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. Another important structure on the site is the Ambasthala Dagoba, which is said to contain the relics of Mahinda Thera. The dagoba is surrounded by a number of smaller structures, including a series of stone pillars that were once used to support a wooden roof.

In addition to these historic monuments, Mihintale is also home to a number of natural attractions that are popular with visitors. The hilltop is surrounded by dense forest, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, deer, and a wide variety of bird species. There are also a number of water tanks and small lakes on the site, which serve as important sources of water for the surrounding communities.
