Sri Lankan Avurudu Celebration at Sigiriya Jungles Resort
Sigiriya Jungles Resort and Spa welcomed the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with a vibrant and immersive Avurudu celebration, offering guests an authentic glimpse into Sri Lanka’s most cherished cultural traditions. The event seamlessly blended ritual, community spirit, and festive indulgence, creating a memorable experience for both local and international visitors.
Auspicious Beginnings and Sacred Rituals
The celebrations commenced at the auspicious hour with the traditional ritual of boiling milk, symbolizing prosperity and new beginnings. Guests were thoughtfully introduced to the significance of Avurudu customs, including the observation of the distinctive cuckoo bird’s call, believed to mark the dawn of the New Year. This cultural initiation set the tone for a day deeply rooted in heritage and meaning.
Traditional Sweetmeats and Ceremonial Lighting
An elaborate traditional sweetmeats buffet followed, featuring beloved delicacies such as kavum, kokis, aluwa, mung kavum, and other festive treats that are synonymous with Avurudu celebrations. The ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp, enriched by guest participation, added a spiritual and communal dimension to the morning’s proceedings.
Games and Joyful Festivities
By 9:30 a.m., the resort grounds transformed into a lively arena of traditional games and activities. Guests enthusiastically engaged in a series of time-honored pastimes, including eyeing the elephant, sack races, bun eating competitions, tug of war, lemon-on-the-spoon races, musical chairs, and the ever-popular “Coin in Flour” challenge. This playful game, where participants retrieve a hidden coin from a plate of flour using only their mouths, brought laughter and a touch of harmless chaos, leaving faces dusted in white and spirits high. Swing riding on the Onchilla added a nostalgic charm, evoking the simplicity of village life.
Rhythms of Tradition with Rabana Drums
A highlight of the festivities was the participation of local elderly women who brought rhythm and authenticity to the event by playing traditional Rabana drums. Their presence not only enriched the cultural atmosphere but also honored the generational roots of these customs.
An Authentic ‘Ambul’ Culinary Experience
The culinary journey continued with a traditional ‘Ambul’ lunch, showcasing an array of authentic Sri Lankan dishes prepared with ingredients such as jackfruit seeds, coconut, and aromatic spices. The meal celebrated the island’s rich culinary heritage, offering guests a true taste of rural Sri Lankan cuisine.
Village Life Brought to the Resort
Adding to the immersive experience were rural-style stalls designed to recreate the ambiance of a traditional village fair. A toddy boutique, a pineapple vendor dressed in a sarong offering freshly cut fruit, a nostalgic ice cream seller on a bicycle with a horn, and a charming ‘Kopi Kade’ serving tea, coffee, and refreshing sherbets all contributed to an atmosphere that was both festive and deeply authentic.
A Celebration to Remember
Through meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to preserving cultural traditions, Sigiriya Jungles Resort and Spa delivered an Avurudu celebration that was entertaining as well as meaningful—bridging cultures and creating lasting memories for all who attended.
